Students Mental Health: The Role of Peer Networks

Students spend a significant part of their lives around other students. They attend classes together, share accommodation, work on assignments, participate in activities, and communicate through social networks. Because of this, peers can become an important source of emotional connection when a student is experiencing a difficult period. A friend may notice that someone has become unusually quiet. A classmate may realise that a student has stopped attending activities they previously enjoyed. Someone living in the same hostel may notice changes in sleep, communication, or daily routines. These observations do not make students mental health professionals. However, they create opportunities for supportive conversations and early connection to appropriate resources. A well designed peer support approach can therefore become one part of a wider student wellbeing system. The aim is not to make students responsible for managing one another's mental health.
